Caroyl Gilbert, RN, CPNP-PC is a pediatric nurse practitioner with extensive training in clinical hypnosis from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.  In addition to teaching clinical hypnosis to her patients, Caroyl has also been active in promoting the use of hypnosis in the medical community by speaking to various nursing and physician assistant professional groups, medical students and physicians about hypnosis and how it can be used to address multiple problems including pain, anxiety and stress.

TO EXPECT

what

Clinical hypnosis is easy to learn, easy to use and is effective for not only managing physical symptoms, such as pain, but also for reducing stress and anxiety which is often encountered by individuals with chronic health conditions. Most children are able to learn the skill and use it effectively after a single 30-minute teaching session.

Two...

A typical session focuses on teaching patients how to use relaxation to go to a place where the mind and body work well together. Once in that place, the imagination is engaged to address the symptom(s) that the patient wants to change. Since children are unusually good at using their imaginations, this intervention works especially well with them. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and is guided and controlled by the patient.

Follow-up teaching sessions can be scheduled as needed for reinforcement of the skill or expansion of its application. You may be surprised by how much this single intervention can improve your child's quality of life, both now and in the future. For more information about clinical hypnosis, please see my website.
